Western Maryland Welcome Center

In 2004, CUSP faculty guided a team of interdisciplinary graduate students in the Western Maryland Environmentally Friendly Welcome Center Competition. Student entries were centered around the four essential elements; earth, wind, fire and water. The CUSP team was selected for third place, with an award of $25,000.

As is apparent in all CUSP projects, the Western Maryland Welcome Center entry employed an integrative approach to designing green building technologies. That is, their use was not regarded merely as add-ons to increase energy efficiency, but fully integrated into the design and architectural intention for the building.

Participation in these competitions educates young architects not only about the importance of sustainable design, but also provide practical experience about its application.
